Your Sound Therapy Questions Answered

FAQs

My Soundbaths consist of multiple instruments being played such as Himalayan Bowls, Gongs, Drums and Crystal bowls. They are played in a therapeutic manner in order to relax the body, calm the mind, and ignite inner awareness. Participants are welcome to find a position that is most comfortable for them and your experience.

To get the most out of your sound bath experience, invite yourself to relax in your own comfortable position laying on the floor, seated or to use a chair, then to simply listen to the sounds and stay present with what is felt during your experience.

Sound therapy works by utilising the vibrational properties of sound to promote healing and well-being in the body and mind. Here's how it typically works:
  • Vibration and Resonance: Sound therapy involves the use of various sound frequencies, tones, and vibrations produced by instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, and drums. When these sounds are experienced, they create vibrations that resonate with the cells, tissues, and organs of the body.

  • Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Sound therapy induces a state of deep relaxation also known as ASC- Altered States of Consciousness by slowing down brain wave activity and promoting the release of tension and stress held in the body. This relaxation response can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
  • Stimulating Healing Processes: The vibrations generated by sound therapy stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms by enhancing circulation, reducing inflammation, and promoting the flow of vital energy (often referred to as "qi" or "prana") throughout the body.
  • Balancing Energy Centres: Sound therapy is also believed to balance the body's energy centres, or chakras, which are associated with specific physical and emotional functions. By restoring balance to these energy centres, sound therapy can support overall health and well-being.
Overall, sound therapy is a holistic modality that addresses the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit, aiming to promote harmony, vitality, and inner peace.

ASC stands for Altered State of Consciousness. An altered state of consciousness refers to any state of awareness that is different from the ordinary waking state. In an altered state of consciousness, individuals may experience changes in perception, cognition, memory, and sense of self.

Sound therapy can support the induction and experience of altered states of consciousness (ASC) through various mechanisms:
  • Brainwave Entrainment: Certain frequencies and rhythms used in sound therapy can entrain the brain to produce specific brainwave patterns associated with altered states of consciousness. For example, theta and delta brainwave frequencies are often associated with deep relaxation, meditation, and states of expanded awareness.
  • Relaxation and Deepening Awareness: The soothing sounds and vibrations used in sound therapy can help induce a state of deep relaxation, which is often a precursor to altered states of consciousness. As the body and mind relax, individuals may experience a heightened sense of awareness and receptivity to subtle shifts in consciousness.
  • Enhanced Sensory Perception: Sound therapy can heighten sensory perception and sensitivity, allowing individuals to experience sound and vibration in a more profound and nuanced way. This heightened sensory awareness can contribute to the exploration of altered states of consciousness and facilitate experiences of expanded consciousness.

  • Facilitating Transpersonal Experiences: Sound therapy sessions conducted in a supportive and nurturing environment can create a safe space for individuals to explore transpersonal experiences and states of consciousness beyond the ordinary waking state. This may include experiences of interconnectedness, unity, and spiritual transcendence.
  • Integration and Processing: Following experiences of altered states of consciousness, sound therapy can support the integration and processing of these experiences on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Through gentle soundscapes and supportive guidance, individuals can navigate their experiences and integrate insights gained during altered states into their daily lives.
Overall, sound therapy provides a gentle and supportive framework for exploring altered states of consciousness, promoting relaxation, self-discovery, and spiritual growth.

I am extremely mindful of how I play and the environment we are in (acoustics etc.) My sound bath events are played within safe volume levels and I periodically measure our volume to ensure this. Please ensure you fill the health questionnaire prior to attending your event to allow me to support you in the best way possible and to bring any particular ailments to my attention. Please also feel free to chat to me prior to the event starting.

“Soundbaths” and “Sound Therapy” are often used to describe a similar experience. In general, a “Soundbath” describes group events where I play musical instruments for the purpose of relaxation. “Sound Therapy” is more often used to describe a private session using musical instruments played on or around the body.

I have had many pregnant women attend my events over the past 7 years.  The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health advises that pregnant women avoid routine exposure to noise louder than 115 decibels, and our sound baths are well below this level and are within a safe volume range (as I measure!).  However, every pregnancy is different and there is not much scientific research regarding sound and pregnancy.

I do not place any bowls or other instruments directly on people during our events unless specified and received prior consent. I recommend pregnant women consult their physician/midwife prior to attending a sound bath event with me. Once physicians/midwifes clearance is obtained, pregnant women are welcome at our sound bath events. Bring an additional pillow or two so you can lay or sit comfortably on your side (laying on your back is not advised after the first trimester, however listen to what your body needs as you know your body and baby better than anyone).

I advise wearing comfortable clothes, and dressing in layers in case you get hot or cold. I also advise not to have a heavy meal prior to your treatment so you are as comfortable as possible.

Please bring a yoga mat if you have one, a pillow, a small throw or personal size blanket.
Eye marks, Warm drinks or a hot water bottle if desired. (At your own risk)
Dress in layers in case you get hot/cold.

Most of my events are restricted to 15-20 people due to my focus on individuals being more personal experience.

Event Policies FAQ

I allow up to two minutes for group events and start exactly on time for every event. I use small local business and do not have a manned reception area. The door opens right into the sound bath area, and late arrivals would be extremely disruptive to people inside. Arrival time is 15 minutes before the event begins. Please DO NOT KNOCK on the door if you are late.

I require advanced registration for all events to ensure I can support you as best as I can. I have a maximum capacity and all events are often sold out.

Please confirm your non-attendance at least 48hours prior to your session so I am able to fill your space from the waiting list. You are also welcome to give or sell your ticket to another person if you cannot make the event you have a ticket for. I will offer only ONE transfer for a different Soundbath event for the consecutive month.

I pride myself on my sessions being as inclusive as possible, so I don’t offer age restrictions on my event sessions, however I do ask you to make conscious effort to understand that your young person or child will not cause any disruption for others, or for you to select the right event for your need. Please contact me if you have any questions reference to this.

I allow photos or recording (audio or video) at my events. I ask that you respect others privacy and to receive consent if you are taking pictures of other attendees. Please ensure you credit Signature Sound Therapies properly at @signaturesoundtherapies

Apologies that you didn’t make it to the event you had tickets for! Due to the limited amount of tickets I have available at each event I cannot offer refunds or “make up sessions” for late arrivals or missed events.
